CHIEF EDITOR

Gulyaev Yury Vasilievich was born on September 18, 1935 in the village of Tomilino, Lyubertsy district of the Moscow region, in 1958 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) with honors in the specialty of radiophysics.
Since then, Yu.V. Gulyaev has been working at the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics named after V.A. Kotelnikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences) as a graduate student, junior researcher, head of a laboratory, department, deputy director ( 1972-1988), director of the institute (1988-2014), now the chief researcher, scientific director of the IRE. V.A. Kotelnikov RAS.
In 1962 he defended his Ph.D. — Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now the Russian Academy of Sciences).
Yu.V. Gulyaev is one of the largest domestic specialists with a worldwide reputation in the field of the element base of informatization and communication tools, one of the founders of new areas of solid state physics and technology — acoustoelectronics, acousto-optics, spin-wave electronics. In 1968 Yu.V. Gulyaev and independently and at the same time the American physicist J. Bluestein predicted and studied a new fundamental type of surface acoustic waves (SAW), known in the world literature as Bluestein-Gulyaev waves.
The works of Yu.V. Gulyaev with colleagues in the field of acoustoelectronics led to the emergence of a new direction in the technology of information processing, communications, and radar. The world production of acoustoelectronic products, which are important components of television sets and radio receivers, radar and communication systems, and, in recent years, cell phones, today amounts to billions of pieces per year.
Yu.V. Gulyaev made a great contribution to the development of acousto-optics and its practical applications. Together with his collaborators, he predicted and discovered a number of new acousto-optical effects: diffraction of light by electron waves accompanying sound in semiconductors, diffraction of light by sound in an active medium, in particular, the effect of acoustic distributed feedback in lasers; resonant and nonlinear acousto-optical phenomena in solids have been studied. He, together with academicians V.A. Kotelnikov, A.M. Prokhorov, Zh.I. Alferov, G.G. Devyatkov, V.I. Pustovoit, prof. V.P. Gapontsev and a number of other scientists and engineers was one of the organizers of research and practical application of fiber-optic systems in communications and other areas of science and technology in our country.
Among other achievements of Yu.V. Gulyaev, one should note the contribution to the development of spin-wave (magnetic) electronics, to the study of a number of nonlinear phenomena during the interaction of spin waves with electrons in magnets, to the study of the functionality of vacuum integrated circuits based on the distributed interaction of microwave fields and electronic streams.
Yu.V. Gulyaev proposed and successfully develops a new «radiophysical» approach to the study of the functioning of the human body, based on a comprehensive measurement of physical fields and radiation of a person in the process of his life. Based on these measurements, together with the teams of a number of leading medical organizations, new methods of non-invasive early medical diagnostics have been developed and continue to be developed, which is the basis of preventive medicine of the future.
Yu.V. Gulyaev has published more than 700 scientific papers, including 11 monographs, alone and in co-authorship, and received about 100 copyright certificates for inventions and patents.
Yu.V. Gulyaev has been active in teaching for over 40 years. He heads the Department of Solid State Electronics and Radiophysics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and is the head of the leading scientific school in the Russian Federation. He has prepared more than 80 candidates of sciences, more than 20 of them became doctors of sciences.
Academician Yu.V. Gulyaev is a major organizer of domestic science. On his initiative, departments of the IRE RAS were established in the cities of Saratov (in 1979) and Ulyanovsk (in 1990). He is one of the founders and organizers of the Saratov Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (in 1981) and its permanent leader. The Department of Microelectronics Technology established at IRE RAS on his initiative in 2002. separated into a separate Institute of Microwave Semiconductor Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Yu.V. Gulyaev organized a new institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in one of the most relevant scientific areas recognized by the state — the Institute of Nanotechnologies of Microelectronics, and in 2006-2009. was its organizing director and is now actively working in this topical area of science and technology.
Yu.V. Gulyaev is the editor-in-chief of the journals «Radio Engineering and Electronics», «Applied Nonlinear Dynamics» and «Biomedical Radioelectronics», chairman of the editorial board of the journal «Informatization and Communication», a member of the editorial boards of a number of journals, including «Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk».
Academician Yu.V. Gulyaev has a high scientific authority in Russia and in the world.
